Processor monitoring tool for adjusting different types of CPU throttling with bypass CPU, extensive features and monitoring of power consumption.

ThrottleStop is a freeware CPU benchmarking app and benchmarker, developed by Kevin Glynn for Windows. It's pretty advanced.

The download has been tested by an editor here on a PC and a list of features has been compiled; see below. We've also created some screenshots of ThrottleStop to illustrate the user interface and show the overall usage and features of this CPU benchmarking program.

A CPU benchmarking tool designed for Core 2 and Core I CPUs

ThrottleStop is a small application designed to monitor for and correct the 3 main types of CPU throttling that are being used on many laptop computers.

The left side of ThrottleStop contains a variety of options which can be used to bypass CPU throttling and on the right side is a Monitoring panel that shows you the current state of each thread on your CPU.

Some laptops are using clock modulation and multiplier reductions to lower the performance and power consumption of your computer. This is done deliberately to either allow your computer to run cooler or to allow your laptop to operate with a power adapter that is not sufficient to fully power your laptop and recharge its battery at the same time.

When using ThrottleStop, it is strongly recommended to monitor power consumption at the wall with a Kill-a-Watt meter or similar device and make sure that you don't exceed the power capabilities of your power adapter. Use of ThrottleStop to bypass these throttling schemes is at your own risk and can result in permanent damage to your power adapter or computer or both which may not be covered by your warranty.

Features of ThrottleStop

  • Benchmark Tools: Compare the performance of your processor to others.
  • Cache Control: Adjust the cache ratio of each core.
  • Clock Control: Adjust the CPU’s clock speed.
  • Core Parking: Adjust how aggressively cores are parked and unparked.
  • FIVR Control: Adjust the voltage of each core independently.
  • Multi-Core Support: Enable or disable individual cores in a multi-core processor.
  • Multiplier Control: Adjust the processor’s multiplier.
  • Power Limits: Limit the maximum power the processor can draw.
  • Speed Shift: Adjust how quickly the processor responds to changes in load.
  • Stress Test: Stress test your processor to identify any potential issues.
  • Temperature Monitor: Monitor the temperature of each core.
  • TjMax Control: Adjust the maximum temperature the processor can reach.
  • Turbo Boost: Enable or disable Intel’s turbo boost technology.
  • Undervolt/Overclock: Adjust the voltage/clock speed of each core.
  • Voltage Control: Fine-tune the voltage settings of your CPU.

Compatibility and License

ThrottleStop is provided under a freeware license on Windows from benchmark software with no restrictions on usage. Download and installation of this PC software is free and 9.6 is the latest version last time we checked.

Is ThrottleStop for Windows 11?

Yes. It can run on a PC with Windows 11 or Windows 10. Previous versions of the OS shouldn't be a problem with Windows 8 and Windows 7 having been tested. It comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit downloads.
